Talk with a Techie: Thomas Wiffen

11 Jan 17

OK, so I actually lured Thomas, our .Net Developer, to his interview under the false pretence of a Table Tennis match. When he arrived ready to rumble, he was pretty surprised to see me there pen and paper in hand. We struck a deal - I could interview him, but only if we played table tennis at the same time. Game on!

The interview started off smoothly with Thomas’ serve.

Describe your career in 5 words (or less), you’re only allowed one expletive!

That’s a difficult question, urm explosive, erratic, successful and fun.

Thomas takes the lead 1 -0

What are the 3 most essential elements of your job?

Being able to think logically and outside the box when possible, being able to juggle a lot of things at once, and being able to trawl through thousands of lines of code.

What’s a day in your life like and what is it about tech that makes you want to get up in the morning?

My days are mainly filled with coding. Getting up in the morning? I’d have to say just enjoying what I do.

Thomas catches me off guard with a spinning ball and gains a point.

If you could only write in one coding language for the rest of your life, which would it be and why?

Cobol … I’m joking, it’s an old legacy language. Urm probably C# as it gives you access to all the .NET framework class libraries, and as it’s supported by Microsoft.

In an industry that’s constantly evolving, how do you stay ahead of the curve?

By constantly learning and adapting so I’m not "pigeon-holeing" myself into one area

When you’re not in front of a screen, what do you get up to?

I’m driving around really fast, but most of the time I am actually in front of a screen.

A foul gives me a point, which Thomas isn’t overly pleased about.

What’s the one piece of advice would give to the next generation of aspiring techies?

Get good, haha! Well, if you want to get good at something you need to learn and enjoy what you’re doing

Do you have any interesting New Year's resolutions?

I don’t really do New Year's resolutions as I don’t stick to them. But I do have a plan for this year involving cryptocurrency.

And finally, if I say Cold Banana Studio, you say..?

Table Tennis Champion!

And with the questions answered our focus was completely on the game. Which Thomas proceeded to win … 14 - 12
